JAR RUBY AND DIAMOND CAMELLIA FLOWER BROOCH:

JAR, aka Joel Arthur Rosenthal, an American in Paris, has quite a cult following amonst bijoux-o-philes and this glorious ruby and diamond brooch certainly illustrates why.  This magnificent piece was especially created for Lily Safra in 2003 and is designed as a camellia flower head.  JAR used divers colours and cuts  of rubies in an effort to mimic the variations of real camellia petals.

The Camellia flowerhead is entirely pavé-set with rubies, weighing a total of 173.09 carats.  It is mounted in silver  (JAR is one of the very few 'haute joaillerie' creators to use silver extensively in his work ) and gold and has a diametre of 8.0 cm.  The brooch has French assay mark for gold on the back and was sold with a custom-made pink leather fitted JAR case.  Signed JAR Paris – Photo: Christie’s.

This spectacular example of the  jeweller's art was sold for $4.319,591 (well above its $1.5 million estimate) at Christie’s Jewels for Hope:  The Collection of Mrs. Lily Safra, sale in Geneva on May 14, 2012 .  It was offered as part of the largest single-owner collection of JAR pieces ever auctioned.  The 18 pieces earned $11.5 million for charity.

A special section of the sale was dedicated to a group of 18 jewels by JAR, the majority of which were created specifically for Safra by the renowned jeweler over a twenty year period starting in the 1980s.   This was the largest private collection of creations by JAR ever to be offered at auction.  More pieces from the sale will be highlighted here in posts to come.

JAR has a jewel-box sized boutique in a small passage way of the Place Vendome, Paris. You must be recommended by an existing client to obtain an appointment with him.  At that time he will decide if he will accept you as his client.
